Level I: In-Service Training

Early Literacy Matters offers trainings on various topics related to the field of early childhood. These trainings are scheduled upon request and designed to meet the needs of the participants.

Level II: Continuing Education Units Literacy Program

Early Literacy Matters (ELM) is proud to offer Continuing Education Units that will include a series of nine (9) modules that are designed specifically for Early Childhood Professionals to increase their knowledge of all components of Early Literacy Development.  Each module will address a different topic that will enhance the skills of those in the field of early childhood. The modules will focus on the following topics:

  • Literacy in EC I, II & III
  • Early Childhood Classroom Methods
  • Language Learning I & II
  • Early Childhood Assessment I & II
  • Early Childhood Portfolio and Assessment Prep
  • Building Connections: Early Literacy and Brain Development
  • Storytelling
  • Parent-teacher partnerships and literacy development
  • Infant Signing and language development

After the participants complete all 9 modules they receive a literacy certificate issued by Hillsborough community college. 

Level III: ECPC-Staff Credential Program

Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) Every licensed child care facility must have one child care professional with a CDA or CDA equivalency for every twenty children. Individuals who intend to earn a Director Credential are required to have a CDA or equivalent.

CDA Equivalency: The ECP (Early Childhood Professional) is Hillsborough Community College’s equivalency to the CDA. ECP students are required to complete the State mandated training (forty hours) prior to certification. Students must also perform the required 480 hours of direct work experience in a licensed child care facility, working in direct supervision of children eight years and under. The program content is divided into eleven modules. Students must complete all modules for certification. Most students complete these within two semesters.

Level IV: Associate in Science Degree in Early Childhood Management

The Associate in Science program will prepare students for a variety of careers in the early childhood field and will give students the competencies and practical experience needed for the CDA (equivalency). The coursework focuses on the development, care, guidance, and education of young children.
